The Kitchen

The traditional rules for kitchen design are based on a work triangle where storage preparation and cooking were arranged as closely together as possible. This design concept was based upon studies done when mothers stayed at home, prepared meals from scratch, stored about 400 items and the family sat for dinner in the dining room.

This triangle concept has worked well in the past however today’s changing lifestyles mean that Mom’s are working and sharing cooking duties with Dads and kids while doing homework, checking e-mail, watching the news and managing different busy school, work and sport schedules. Foods are pre-prepared or made of pre-prepared portions or mixes and the kitchen now stores about double the items it did before.

This means multiple work areas are needed and those work areas need to be adaptable to homework, paying bills, preparing food and sharing a table for a meal.

The Dream –

Today’s kitchens are changing with new technologies like flash ovens,  improved versions of microwaves, steamers and alternative cook tops. More importantly, while kitchens have always been a place where everyone congregates, today's kitchens are more of a live-in experience.

Adding an island is one of the most common ways to build multiple work areas into a kitchen.  An island creates 2-4 small workstations along its perimeter.  If a second sink is added or the cook top is placed into the island the island becomes a major work center, allowing food preparation and finished food placement around the island.

An important part of this process is understanding who you are and what you are looking for. Are you looking for a gourmand kitchen with the ability to cook and prepare dinners for 10-20 people? Do you like to purchase food in bulk and do you need a separate upright freezer unit or pantry storage?

Outdoor kitchens are relatively new in remodeling however there is a significant move toward extending indoor space to the outdoors. Typically built off of a family room or entertainment area, these are extensions of the home interior, providing a place to entertain, party or simply relax and have dinner without heating up the house.  Outdoor kitchens are more than just a built-in grill.  They also include refrigerators, stone pizza ovens, breakfast tables and fully functional ovens.

The Design

How do you bring dreams to reality? It's important to find someone who can take your dreams, understand who you are, and deal with all of the details without overwhelming you with them.

It’s important for your remodeler to understand your family and lifestyle to design a kitchen which is appropriate for your family. More importantly, they need to help you understand what your family and lifestyle will look like 3-5 years from now. Planning a kitchen just for today means you are missing opportunities for the future.

In addition to a technical expert, you need someone you can connect with. Someone you can trust, who's genuinely excited about your project and respects your opinion. This is your home and your money - the process must run smoothly and respect the fact you are living in this space. Other areas of the home must be protected. AC Remodel is just the kind of company you’re looking for.

At the end of the design phase you will have a firm price with defined deliverables and a set schedule.  No unknowns - no surprises - just the anticipation of enjoying your new space.
